Tutoring that fits the Australian school day

Australia is one of Qlive’s largest student groups, with families in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and regional towns. Qlive teachers have taught 100,000+ hours of live one-to-one classes, to families in 30+ countries.

Australian schools run Monday to Friday over four terms, and the school day usually ends by mid-afternoon. That makes the hours straight after school the most popular slot, along with weekend mornings. Australia spans several time zones, and some states use daylight saving while others do not, so we always show times in your own local time. A family in Perth and a family in Melbourne both see their class at their own time in the class confirmation, the reminders and the Qlive Learn app.

Year levels and grades

Australian year levels line up closely with grades elsewhere: Year 4 is about Grade 4, and Year 10 about Grade 10. The first year of school has different names by state, such as Foundation, Prep, Kindergarten or Reception. Tell us your child’s year level and school, and we match the rest.

What children in Australia study

Schools teach the Australian Curriculum, which each state and territory adapts. Our teachers work with the Victorian Curriculum and NSW syllabuses most often, and also teach students in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

  • Foundation to Year 2. Phonics, early reading and writing, counting and number sense.
  • Years 3 to 6. Place value, fractions, times tables, reading comprehension and written expression. NAPLAN in Years 3 and 5 is when many parents first notice a gap.
  • Years 7 to 10. Algebra, geometry and statistics in maths, and the move to more formal science and English. NAPLAN comes again in Years 7 and 9.
  • Years 11 and 12. The senior certificates, such as the VCE in Victoria and the HSC in New South Wales, with subjects like mathematical methods, specialist maths, physics, chemistry and biology.

Some families also ask about selective school and scholarship tests, which usually assess reading, mathematical reasoning, general reasoning or thinking skills, and writing. The core maths and English skills behind them are part of what our teachers cover in the school years leading up to them.

A number of families in Australia also keep their children in step with CBSE, often because they may move back to India. We teach CBSE, ICSE and state board syllabi as well.

Home languages and school languages

Many Australian families of Indian and South Asian background tell us their children understand Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil or Urdu at home but cannot read or write it. We teach these languages one-to-one, from letters and sounds through to reading, writing and conversation. Children starting from scratch can follow the Foundation programme, which builds Hindi, Malayalam or Arabic step by step through levels. We also teach Arabic, French, Spanish and German.

Where it helps, we match a teacher who speaks your home language, which can make the first classes easier for a young child.

How it works for Australian families

  1. A free assessment. About 40 adaptive questions, guided live by a Qlive counsellor. The report shows what your child is strong at, what they are working on and the specific gaps.
  2. A matched teacher. Chosen for subject, curriculum, year level, your free times and, where it matters, language. A 45 minute demo class is available first if you want one.
  3. A fixed weekly slot. Classes are usually 60 minutes, live on Google Meet with the learning on Qlive Space, Qlive’s AI-powered, activity-based learning platform. Classes are recorded.
  4. A Student Success Partner. A person on your family’s side who keeps your child’s goal in view and brings in whatever helps, from a revised plan to extra practice before assessments. They are a message away in the Qlive Learn app.

Before each class the Qlive Learn app asks you to confirm, change the time or skip that day, then sends reminders 15 and 5 minutes before with a button to join. Each class also has a chat in the app with the teacher and the Qlive team. Worksheets arrive in Qlive Pulse between classes, and a checkpoint every two to three weeks shows whether recent topics have stuck.

Fees and payment

Fees are set per student after the assessment, depending on subject, curriculum, year level and number of classes, and you are billed for classes actually taken. Australian families can pay by bank transfer in AUD, or by card.

Australia: questions parents ask

Are class times shown in our local time, wherever we are in Australia?

Yes. Times are shown in your own time zone, whether that is Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth, in the class confirmation, the reminders and everything else in the Qlive Learn app. They also follow daylight saving changes in the states that use it.

Do your teachers follow the Victorian and NSW curricula?

Yes. We teach the Australian Curriculum, including the Victorian Curriculum and NSW syllabuses. Tell us your child's year level and school, and we match a teacher who teaches that course.

Can classes be on Saturday or Sunday?

Yes. Weekend slots are popular with Australian families, as are after-school weekday afternoons. Tell us your free times and we match a teacher who is available then.

Can my child learn Hindi or Malayalam with you?

Yes. We teach Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu and Arabic, as well as French, Spanish and German. Children starting from scratch can follow the Foundation programme in Hindi, Malayalam or Arabic.

Can we pay in Australian dollars?

Yes. Families in Australia can pay by bank transfer in AUD, or by card. Fees are set per student after the free assessment and billed for classes actually taken.
