Tutoring that fits the UK school day

The UK is one of Qlive’s largest student groups. We teach children across the country, from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Leicester, Leeds and the towns around them. Qlive teachers have taught 100,000+ hours of live classes, one-to-one, to families in 30+ countries.

UK schools run Monday to Friday, and the school day usually finishes by mid-afternoon. Most families pick a slot after school and a snack, in the early evening, or on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Every time you see from Qlive, in the class confirmation, the reminders and the Qlive Learn app, is shown in UK time, and it follows the clocks when they go forward or back.

Year groups and grades

UK schools count in year groups, and much of the rest of the world counts in grades. As a rough guide, Year 2 is about Grade 1, Year 7 about Grade 6 and Year 11, the GCSE year, about Grade 10. When you book, just tell us the year group and school, and we take care of the rest.

What children in the UK study

Most children in the UK follow the National Curriculum for England, or the curricula used in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, through the key stages:

  • Key Stages 1 and 2 (Years 1 to 6). Reading, writing, phonics and spelling, number, the four operations, fractions and times tables. The end of primary is also when some families think about grammar school entrance tests, often called the 11+, which lean heavily on maths and English.
  • Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9). Algebra, the three sciences, English literature and language, and modern languages, all getting more demanding.
  • GCSE (Years 10 and 11). The first major exams, with different specifications for each exam board. We also teach IGCSE, which many independent schools use.
  • A-Level (Years 12 and 13). Maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, business and computer science are among the A-Level subjects our teachers cover.

Tell us your child’s year group, school and exam board, and we match a teacher who teaches that course.

Some families in the UK are also keeping up with CBSE or a state board, often because they expect to return to India or want their child to stay in step with cousins there. We teach those syllabi too.

Home languages, kept alive

Many UK families tell us their children understand Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil or Urdu at home but cannot read or write it, and that the gap widens with each year of English schooling. Others want Arabic for school, faith or family reasons.

We teach Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu and Arabic one-to-one, from first letters and sounds up to reading, writing and conversation. Children starting from scratch can follow the Foundation programme, which builds Hindi, Malayalam or Arabic step by step through levels. We also teach French, Spanish and German for school.

How it works for UK families

  1. A free assessment. About 40 adaptive questions, guided live by a Qlive counsellor, ending with a report on what your child is strong at, what they are working on and the specific gaps.
  2. A matched teacher. Chosen for subject, curriculum, year group, your free times and, where it matters, language. A 45 minute demo class is available first if you want one.
  3. A fixed weekly slot. Classes are usually 60 minutes, live on Google Meet with the learning on Qlive Space, Qlive’s AI-powered, activity-based learning platform. Classes are recorded.
  4. A Student Success Partner. A person on your side whose job is your child reaching the goal you set, whether that is keeping up in class or a strong GCSE result. They bring in what is needed and are a message away in the Qlive Learn app.

Before each class the Qlive Learn app asks you to confirm, change the time or skip that day, then sends reminders 15 and 5 minutes before with a button to join. Each class also has a chat in the app with the teacher and the Qlive team. Between classes, worksheets arrive in Qlive Pulse, with a checkpoint every two to three weeks so you can see whether recent topics have stuck.

Fees and payment

Fees are set per student after the assessment, depending on subject, curriculum, year group and number of classes, and you are billed for classes actually taken. UK families can pay by bank transfer in GBP, or by card.
